“They use me as a climbing frame, it’s magical how close nature sometimes gets.”
A special memory during our safari in Botswana? During our overnight safari stay at the iconic Jack’s Camp, we experienced something that even exceeded our expectations. Think: luxury, starlit skies, and an encounter with the meerkat queen herself. Want to know what it’s like to be awakened by curious animals? Read along about an enchanting adventure in the salt pans of Botswana.
A dreamlike safari in Botswana
Some places are more than just a destination; they are a feeling. Jack’s Camp is one of those places. The moment we arrived, we looked at each other in speechless awe. Colonial elegance mixed with Arabian vibes, a 200 m² tent, and a plunge pool. Every corner is soaked in character and history. This is not just a lodge; this is a time travel.

From afternoon tea to night safari in Botswana
We felt like a princess and prince during afternoon tea in the communal tent. And after a stylish dinner, it was time for a night safari with our private guide. And it did not disappoint. Among zebras and wildebeests, we even saw a shy aardvark, a rare guest. The magic of the night in the African bush is indescribable; you have to experience it.
A sunrise with meerkats
The next morning (far too early, but with good coffee in bed), we drove towards the Makgadikgadi salt pans. Our local guide knew exactly where we needed to be. It felt like a mission: a meeting with a unique colony of meerkats that he has been following for years.
There she is: Queen Macoco
Silence. Expectation. And then a little face that cautiously appears from the sand. This is Macoco: the queen of the colony, made famous by the BBC series Dynasties. Immediately, the rest of her entourage appears: alert, curious, and ready to sunbathe.
Solar panels with little legs
Meerkats use their black bellies as solar panels to warm up. Within minutes, they are active. And curious. Before I know it, they are on my lap, shoulder, and even on my head. “They sense positive energy,” says our guide. I am silent with happiness.

Hunting with the colony
As if we belong, we then walk along with the meerkats that are looking for beetles, worms, and grasshoppers. Their energy is infectious, their teamwork admirable. And while they catch their breakfast, we are surprised with our own tasty treat by the car. Our guide Villa has prepared a wonderful field breakfast.
A memory for a lifetime
Sitting at a richly set table in the middle of the wilderness, I reflect on this morning safari. It is the kind of experience that stays in your heart. Not just because of the animals, but also due to the pure connection with nature that you feel here.
