Why we love this area
"In Khwai, you experience the Delta in complete freedom during a self-drive, wild and close up."

Khwai is one of the most beloved safari areas in Botswana, and that is for a good reason. It lies between Moremi and Chobe and forms a unique transition zone where marshes, rivers, savannahs, and forests come together. This is not a national park, but a community concession, which means you have much more freedom to move here than in protected parks. Perfect for self-drive travelers, mobile safari camps, and small-scale lodges like Khwai Leadwood.
In Khwai, you can drive yourself, spot wildlife by the water, or stay overnight at one of the simple bush campsites. You will also find stylish lodges with river views. Thanks to the varied landscape, Khwai is interesting year-round. You can enjoy game drives, walking safaris, and mokoro trips. Sometimes even all in one day. And because the area is relatively small, the chances of unique sightings are high: wild dogs, lions, hippos, leopards, everything comes together here.
Best travel time
From June to October, it gets drier in Khwai, and wildlife moves en masse to the water of the Khwai River. This is the high season for safaris. In the rainy season (November to March), it is quieter, greener, and spectacular for birdwatchers. Between April and June, you can experience the best of both seasons: lush and well-passable roads.
