Why we love this area
"Okay, Maun is not a safari, but without Maun, there’s no safari."

This vibrant town sits at the edge of the wilderness and is the gateway to the Okavango Delta. Almost every safari in Botswana starts or ends here. The moment you arrive, you feel it: small planes taking off towards the bush, safari jeeps coming and going, and a mix of Setswana and English filling the air. But Maun is more than just a logistical hub.
Along the river, you’ll find surprisingly nice lodges and guesthouses, perfect for a relaxed first or last night. Picture swimming with a view of the river, sipping a cold beer on a wooden deck, and enjoying a gentle breeze through the acacias. Maun is also ideal for your self-drive preparations, visiting a local market, or seeing the Delta from above by plane.
Whether it’s for a night’s sleep or a sunset a helicopter flight, Maun is always part of the Botswana safari experience. And the more often you return, the more you’ll appreciate it.
Best travel time
Maun can be visited year-round. The dry season (May–October) is cooler and perfect for heading into the Delta. The rainy season (November–March) brings warmth, vibrant green landscapes, and a spectacular variety of birds, making the town lively and full of life.
