Why we love the Okavango Panhandle
"The Okavango Panhandle doesn't necessarily offer thrilling and spectacular safaris, but it is a place full of tranquility and the rhythm of the day."

The Okavango Panhandle is the narrow northern beginning of the famous Okavango Delta, where the river flows into Botswana from the Angolan highlands. Here, the water begins its journey, first as a deep, calm river, before it fans out into the expansive Delta. The Panhandle is greener, quieter, and less visited than the rest of the Delta. And that is precisely its charm.
Along the river, you’ll find small lodges, fishing villages, and traditional settlements. Typical game drives are rare here; instead, boat safaris, mokoro trips, and fishing for tiger fish and tilapia are the main attractions. Early mornings and evenings are magical, with reflections on the water and abundant birdlife. From bee-eaters to Pel’s fishing owl, the trees are alive with color and song.
The region is easily accessible for self-drive travelers and combines wonderfully with a route to Tsodilo Hills, Maun, or Caprivi. Lodges like Nxamaseri Island Lodge and Sitatunga Island offer an intimate atmosphere, personal service, and views of the river. With a gin & tonic in your hand and kingfishers at eye level!
Best time to visit
The best time to visit the Panhandle is from May to October, when the water is clear and boat safaris and fishing are at their best. November to March is the breeding season, ideal for birdwatchers and those seeking peace, but it is warmer and more humid.
