Why we love Nxai Pan in Botswana
"Enjoy a sundowner at one of the most beautiful waterholes with hundreds of zebras in the background!"

Nxai Pan in Botswana is one of those places where your gaze naturally drifts to the horizon. Expansive plains, occasionally interrupted by a solitary acacia or the iconic Baines’ Baobabs, create a poetic and serene landscape. In the dry season, it may seem deserted, but appearances are deceiving. When the rains arrive, Nxai Pan comes alive: thousands of zebras and wildebeests migrate here in search of fresh grass and water, followed closely by lions, cheetahs, and even the rare brown hyena.
What makes Nxai Pan so special is the silence. No crowded lodges or vehicles, just a few well-placed campsites and one lodge (Nxai Pan Camp) overlooking the open plains. Watch storm clouds gather on the horizon as giraffes stroll slowly by. For those who value space, rhythm, and tranquility on safari, Nxai Pan is a dream destination.
For self-drive enthusiasts, this is an accessible and adventurous destination. Access from the main road between Maun and Nata is relatively straightforward with a good 4×4. The campsites are located in the wild, without fences, but with a view. It’s wilderness that you can explore on your own. Without sacrificing experience or safety.
Best travel time
The best time to visit Nxai Pan in Botswana is from December to April, during the green rainy season. During this period, the spectacular migration of thousands of zebras and wildebeests takes place, an impressive and relatively unknown natural spectacle. This is also when predators come into the area. Expect short rain showers and lush landscapes. In the dry season (May–October), it’s quieter with less wildlife, but the landscape remains fascinating due to its endless emptiness and photogenic baobabs.
