“The rhythm of the poler, the birds, the stillness, you feel one with the Okavango Delta.”
Imagine this: you step into a traditional mokoro, the water is calm, the sun rises above the reeds, and in the background, you hear the sounds of the Okavango Delta, the call of an African fish eagle. During a multi-day mokoro expedition in the Okavango Delta, you experience Botswana as it is meant to be. Pure, quiet, unfiltered. You paddle deep into the wilderness and sleep on small islands, where the staff arranges everything to perfection. And as the icing on the cake? Morning walks among the elephants and zebras. Curious about what a Mokoro Safari is like? Read on.
A safari without motors, but full of life!
In a world where much revolves around speed and luxury, this safari is one of simplicity and nature. The mokoro, once a traditional hollowed-out log but now often made from plastic, is your means of transport. No engines, no noise. You glide through winding crystal-clear channels, between papyrus, lilies, and reeds. All you hear are birds, the sounds of the poler, and sometimes the splash and grunt of a hippopotamus in the distance.
“Sleeping on an island under millions of stars.”
Every evening you set up camp on a different island. The staff pitches tents, provides warm water, and cooks over the campfire. You only need to enjoy. At night, you listen to the sounds of the Delta: hyenas in the distance, an owl close to your tent. And that starry sky? You will never forget it.

Walking safaris at sunrise!
Before the sun is fully up, you set off on foot with your guide. The smell of grass, fresh tracks in the sand, and suddenly… a herd of elephants watching you from a distance. On a walking safari, you feel small but alive. You learn not only about tracks and plants but also about animal behavior and how to approach them respectfully.
Everything is arranged, really everything
You only carry your daypack. The staff takes care of all tents, meals, water, and safety. The food is surprisingly delicious! Think of fresh bread from a Dutch oven, vegetables, meat or vegetarian options, and even a dessert. This is back-to-basics without sacrificing comfort.

Some people think that a mokoro expedition is only for experienced safari-goers. Nothing could be further from the truth. Most expeditions are comfortable, small-scale, and tailored to your pace. Your guide instinctively knows what you need: rest, challenge, or simply a moment of silence with a cup of tea in your hand.
“A mokoro safari in Botswana is not just for seasoned adventurers!”
When and where do you depart?
The best time is from June to October, when the water is high and the Delta is at its most beautiful. You usually depart from a place like Maun or a camp in the southern Delta, where your polers and guides are already waiting for you.
